Expenses: Mobile Phone Deduction

Can I Deduct the Business Use of My Cell Phone?

Your business use of a cell phone is deductible. The usage is determined as a percent of business to personal use. You must be able to substantiate the business use percentage. Simply highlight the business calls from your printed cell phone bill, add up the time of those calls and divide by the time of all your calls. This will give you a percentage you can apply to the cost of the service to determine your deductible portion. Talk to your tax professional to discuss acceptable sampling methods to eliminate having to do this with every bill.

Note: Consult your tax professional to see if this fits your circumstances. This is not to be taken as tax advice. Please refer to our End User License Agreement.
